And He said to him, "Follow Me." So he arose and followed Him"
(Matt 9:9).
Wanted: Men.
Not systems fit and wise,
Not faiths with rigid eyes,
Not wealth in mountain piles,
Not power with gracious smiles,
Not even the potent pen;
Wanted, Men.
Wanted: Deeds.
Not words of winning note,
Not thoughts from life remote,
Not fond religious airs,
Not sweetly languid prayers,
Not love of scent and creeds;
Wanted: Deeds.
Men and Deeds.
Men that can dare and do;
Not longing for the new,
Not pratings of the old:
Good life and action bold -
These the occasion needs,
Men and Deeds.''
Poem by Rev. Duncan MacGregor (1854-1923)
